Bassist with a vial of red liquid

Progressive metal with a unique twist comes in the form of Valfreyja, the one-piece band hailing from Sweden, where the talents of multi-instrumentalist David Blomgren are given free rein. Among the countless influences behind Valfreyja's music, the most prominent are metal, hard rock, classical music and jazz fusion, although sources of inspiration are found in paintings, historical texts, and even raw emotions. The name Valfreyja is taken from the war aspect of the nordic goddess Freja, meaning "Freja of the slain".

Guitarist in a forest

Previous experiences behind Valfreyja is composed of over 7 years of playing live music, as well as more than 5 years spent independently writing, recording and producing music. These years have seen an EP and two full-length albums created, one of which, simply titled as "Valfreyja", has been released to the public on music streaming platforms and Bandcamp.

Guitarist lying in field of flowers

As for the music of Valfreyja, it falls under the umbrella of progressive metal, blending intricately written instrumental parts on par with the prog metal greats, with live-improvised guitar solos inspired by the likes of Allan Holdsworth and Tosin Abasi. One of the goals of Valfreyja is to explore groundbreaking instrument techniques, such as thumping and selective picking, following in the footsteps of bands such as Animals As Leaders.
