A man reaching towards a shining window

Progressive metal with a unique twist comes in the form of Valfreyja, the one-piece band hailing from Sweden, where the talents of multi-instrumentalist David Blomgren are given free rein. Among the countless influences behind Valfreyja's music, the most prominent are metal, hard rock, classical music and jazz fusion, although sources of inspiration are found in paintings, historical texts, and even raw emotions. The name Valfreyja is taken from the war aspect of the nordic goddess Freja, meaning "Freja of the slain", evoking thoughts of the beauty of harmony and a primal strength. These aspects and more are encompassed by Valfreyja’s music.

PRESS RELEASE - "THE WATCHMAKER"

Swedish underground metal act VALFREYJA unveils schematics for madness with new EP ’THE WATCHMAKER’ on MONTH/DAY

What if every moment was separated by an eternity?

From the depths of Sweden’s cornucopia of music, Valfreyja sends out an invite to delve into lunacy beyond mortal comprehension. On ”MONTH/DAY” the prog metal act releases the new 3-song EP ’THE WATCHMAKER’ which explores themes of madness, hereditary burdens and perception of time through songs that combine progressive rock, technical metal and jazz fusion. This riff-laden EP showcases the Swedish acts’ continued exploration of story-driven songwriting that began with the previous release ’The Rose Of Rebirth’.

What if something could protect against infinity?

A son searching for the truth regarding his father’s passing. Mountains of diaries and drawings hiding schematics for a monstrous design. A mysterious watch with an incomprehensible clockface. Through wild rythms, lush guitar chords, harsh screams and powerful singing, Valfreyja conjures up a tale of searching for secrets that grows to cosmic proportions dealing with strange mathematical concepts and the universe’s inner workings.

What if someone needed to harbor infinity, for time’s sake?

’The Watchmaker’ opens with the titular track, immediately greeting the listener with intricate rythmic guitar riffs and a rising tension that continues to build. As the song progresses the harsh screams take center stage, with the protagonist of our story howling in search of his late father’s hidden secrets, continuing with powerful rock vocals and crazed guitar solos.

”I have awoken again
In toil
Slaving away to construct this monstrosity
It’s size belies what hides inside”

Following the opening track, ’Infinitesimal Time’ contrasts the previous rythms and heavy riffs with a softer flow and a focus on large and complex chords, creating an otherwordly atmosphere. Clean vocals paint a vivid picture of the next chapter, exploring a strange world amidst the swirls of guitar melodies. ’An End To Infinity’ opens with a soft bass melody that is abruptly followed by a rythmic intro where all instruments build a large soundscape to set the stage for the finale. The growling protagonist demands answers and comes face-to-face with an entity pulling the strings, while technical guitar riffs and thundering bass lines whiz by. The song moves seamlessly through different styles before ending this cosmic tale, but even so the greater mystery is left open for interpretation.
